Tim has developed a practice in Family Law, Criminal Defence and Civil Litigation, with a particular focus on family law matters. Tim appears regularly in Nova Scotia Family and Provincial Courts, the Nova Scotia Supreme Court and the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal.

Tim is an experienced negotiator and litigator and is also trained in family mediation and collaborative family law.  He is a member of The Association of Collaborative Family Law Lawyers of Nova Scotia.  With this training and his many years of experience, Tim can offer clients several options to resolve their problems.

Tim was appointed Queen’s Counsel in March 2011. A small number of Q.C.’s are appointed each year. The Q.C. is granted to lawyers who practice at least 15 years in Nova Scotia and who demonstrate professional integrity, good character and outstanding contributions to the practice of law. The contribution of the lawyer must be through one of the following: recognition by other members of the profession as an exceptional Barrister and Solicitor; exceptional contribution through legal scholarship teaching or continuing legal education; a demonstration of exceptional qualities of leadership in the profession; or engaging in activities of a public or charitable nature in such a way as to raise the esteem in which the legal profession is held by the public.

Tim was elected as 2nd Vice President of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society commencing June 2010. He will serve a three year term, becoming President of the Society commencing in June 2012. In this position, Tim will provide leadership to the governing body for lawyers in Nova Scotia and working in the public interest to improve access to justice in Nova Scotia.  He will sit on Bar Council, the governing body for lawyers in Nova Scotia, and will sit on numerous committees in carrying out that work. In the past he has served on Executive, Finance, Ethics, Professional Responsibility Policies and Procedures, Gender Equity and Lawyers’ Fund for Client Compensation Committees.  He was Chair of the Task Force on Lawyer/Client Loans and is the current Chair the Family Law Standards Committee.

Tim is member of the Canadian Bar Association.   He has served as the Secretary/Treasurer of the Pictou County Bar Society for several years and is a Past President of the Pictou County YM/YWCA. He has served on the Board of New Leaf (an anger management program for men) and is a founding member and current volunteer Facilitator in the Parent Education Program through the Nova Scotia Family Court. Tim is a Mentor through Big Brothers and Big Sisters. He has taught a Business Law Course at St. Francis Xavier University and the Nova Scotia Community College. He enjoys teaching public speaking and debating to young students whenever he can.

A Newfoundlander by birth and a Nova Scotian by choice, Tim is known for his sense of humor and total dedication to his clients. He relishes the challenge of new areas of law and new situations. Most of all, Tim prides himself on his family and can relate to the impact of the law on others and their families.
